Although there has been recent controversy about the use of IQ tests in the diagnosis of learning disabilities (see 2), for the time being measures of intellectual ability play an integral role in diagnosis, and this featured role has been especially true for the Wechsler scales. Current diagnostic criteria for learning disabilities require achievement, as measured by individually administered standardized tests..., that is substantially below that expected given the person s chronological age, measured intelligence, and age-appropriate education (American Psychiatric Association, 1994, p. 50). There are two primary methods by which learning disabilities are determined: the simple difference method and the predicted difference method (Reynolds, 1984, 1990). The simple difference (subtracting the achievement score from the IQ) is used by many because it is straightforward and easily understood by parents as well as teachers. Most state education agencies have selected a discrepancy in the range of about 11 2 standard deviations (18 to 22 standard score points) as a cut-off (Kamphaus, 1993). The problem with the simple discrepancy method is that it does not take into account the regression of achievement on intelligence (Reynolds, 1984, 1990). Thus, it can lead to overidentification of individuals with high IQs and underidentification of individuals with low IQs.
